Remaining focused can seem like a huge task in a world when notifications, streaming services, and unending social media browsing are the norm. However, the empowering reality is that you can learn to become good at paying attention, and this is a skill that will help you long after you graduate from college.

Firstly, let us look at the smartphone. Although it is a strong tool, it can also be the biggest source of distraction. Physically remove yourself from your phone during study sessions, or use app-blocking software. When those alert pings are not grabbing your attention all the time, you will be shocked at how much more you get done.

Establish a distinct area for study, such as a quiet café, a corner of your room, an empty classroom, or a table at the library. This area should only be used for work; no Netflix, no scrolling—just focused work. It will become simpler to enter the zone as your brain begins to link this area with concentration.

Although multitasking appears to save time, it really reduces focus. Try the Pomodoro Technique instead, which involves working hard for 25 minutes and then taking a 5-minute rest. This technique allows your brain to get regular breaks while maintaining a high level of attention. Close any tabs on your browser that are not necessary while working, then put your phone on ‘Do Not Disturb’ and focus on the task at hand.

Finally, be patient with yourself while you develop this ability. Appreciate the times you are able to stay focused and take lessons from the times you have to adjust. By learning to manage your attention, you are developing a vital life skill that will benefit both your personal and professional life in the future, in addition to raising your grade point average.

And of course, be mindful of over indulgence in social and other activities which might eat into the fabric of your academic studies - don’t lose focus of why you’re in university.
